Covenant University develops e-attendance software

The ingenuity of Faculty and Staff in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE), Covenant University was once again on display with the development of an e-Attendance Management System

The demo, which took place on Monday, May 13, 2013 in the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room is a system that will enhance tracking timeliness or absenteeism in various University functions for staff, and lecture attendance for students. I will reserve my comment about this one.


Team leader, Dr. Victor O. Matthews, in his presentation said the software was geared towards ensuring an effective and efficient attendance management system using the Radio Frequency Identification Cards (RFID) in monitoring compliance by faculty, staff and students of the University. The first phase of the project, which has just been executed, is for Faculty and Staff of the University.
According to Dr. Matthews, with the acquisition of the RFID module, the software can be deployed to any of the official functions of the University. The software interface carries the names, events, date stamp and time of attendance of any event. The software is programmed to accommodate all the activities of the University from Chapel Services, to Inaugural Lectures, Public Lectures and Faculty Fellowship. It is also deployable on both the University Ethernet LAN and wireless LAN.
Dr. Matthews, who was accompanied to the presentation by Engineer Emmanuel Adetiba of the EIE, said the team would work hard to ensure the software is tamper proof and secure from both internal and external intrusion. He noted also that if the quest of Covenant University to become one of the top ten leading universities in the world would become a reality, then the University must start to export some of her innovations to other tertiary institutions, and the e-Attendance is one of such products to start with.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Korede Ayo, in his remarks, commended members of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) for the great job they are doing. The Vice-Chancellor also promised the support of the Management to ensure that all the plans of the Department are realized before the upcoming convocation.
In a related development, Dr. V. O. Matthews briefed the Management on the ongoing projects in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE). One of which is the Laboratory Project. He pointed out the shortfalls of the imported laboratory training modules and noted that the Department of EIE was on the verge of assembling some of those practical modules at the University.
According to him, the imported training modules are things that can be produced locally. He observed that the peculiarity of the power situation in the nation has made it absolutely necessary for the Department to design a new laboratory training module that would enable students continue with their experiments even when there is power outage.
He promised that the prototype would be ready before the next convocation and when compared with the imported ones it would be most preferable. “The Management of Covenant University having spent hundreds of millions of naira over the years to get the best of laboratory equipment for the University, the success of the new laboratory module will go a long way in driving experimental activities not only at Covenant University, but also her sister institution, Landmark University,” Dr. Matthews concluded.
